One great thing about studying abroad in Spain is that there are a number of traditional festivals that you can participate in! Lunes de Aguas, a local Salamanca festival, takes place the Monday after Easter.
In Salamanca, many business, schools, and offices close for the afternoon to celebrate. On this day, students and locals go to the countryside with family and friends to eat hornazo and celebrate the end of lent.

The style and mood of Semana Santa festivities vary depending on region, city, and time of day. Some processions are very somber and gloomy while others are upbeat and lively.

Spain is internationally recognized for its rich tradition and culture, the importance placed on family celebrations. Semana Santa, or Holy Week, is a customary celebration that is extravagantly celebrated throughout Spain. Similar to the U.S. Spring Break, Semana Santa implies a weeklong vacation for students. It is the week preceding Easter Sunday and consists of Palm Sunday, Ash Wednesday, Holy Thursday, and Good Friday. However, rather than taking this week to travel south and party with friends, this week in Spain is spent relaxing with family and partaking in Catholic rooted festivities.
